Registered Dental Assistant Extended Function

​

Expand your dental assisting skills with our RDAEF2 Extended Function course. Learn comprehensive techniques and gain practical expertise to assist dentists in advanced procedures. Perfect for advancing your career in the dental field.

Course Requirements/ Description

1. A valid California RDA license.

2.Proof of liability insurance coverage (a copy of your employer's liability insurance is acceptable).

3. Certificates in fissure sealants.

4. Current employment in a dental office as an RDA

Program Description:

1. Enrollment is on a first-come, first-served basis. 

2.Classes are held on Saturdays and Sundays, from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM, every other weekend. 

3. Homework assignments will be provided via Canvas throughout the course. Each student must review all lectures and pass online tests. 

4. Students must have access to a computer. 

5. Students are required to have dental loupes with a 2.5 magnification or greater. Students must provide their own instruments and consumable supplies (a list will be provided). Students are required to wear scrubs and a lab coat.

Class Expectations

This program is 410-hours and will be taught in four modules. Each student must pass each module with a 75% pass rate before proceeding to the next module. We urge students to attend all classes to prevent a repeat of the course and additional tuition charges.

Specific Clinic Requirements

  • Proper placement of retraction cord on two crown preparations.

  • Taking a final impression of a crown preparation on 2 separate teeth, and placement of retraction cord.

  • Each student will be required to provide their own patient during cord retractions and final impressions.

  • Each student will be required to place contour and finish, Amalgam and composite restorations on prepared permanent teeth

  • 50% shall be class II restorations.

  • 20% class 5  restorations 10% amalgam restorations.

  • 20%  can be either composite or amalgam 

  • Over 130 prepared teeth for amalgam and composite will be provided.

  • Each student must complete the externship  part of the program in their office of employment after the student has achieved laboratory competency

  • A typodont with cheeks and teeth will be included.

  • Impression material, composite, and amalgam  will be provided to each student.

  • A detailed list of the students' armamentaria kit. Will be emailed when you register for the course.

Student Learning Outcomes

  • Oral health assessment in school-based and community health project settings under the direction of a dentist, registered dental hygienist, or a dental hygienist in alternative practice.

  • Take final impressions for permanent indirect restorations 

  • Adjusting and cement permanent indirect restorations.

  • Polish and contour existing amalgam restorations.

  • Conduct a preliminary evaluation of the patient’s oral health, which may include charting, Intraoral and Extraoral soft tissue evaluation, occlusion classification, and myofunctional assessment.

  • Size, fit,  and cement endodontic master points and accessory points.

  • Cord retraction of the gingiva for final impression procedures.

  • Take final final impressions for tooth-borne removable prosthesis.

  • Place contour finish and adjust all direct restorations
